What’s exactly in an essential oil bottle? 💧✨ Man What’s exactly in an essential oil bottle? 💧✨

Many botanicals are highly aromatic and contain a huge range of chemical compounds, many of which are medicinal and beneficial for humans. Ancient alchemists say that essential oils contain the actual life force of a plant. 

These oils can be found in the resins, leaves, flowers, roots, woods, seeds, barks, or fruits of plants. They help plants and trees with countless biological functions and processes, from being used as energy to attracting pollinators with their strong aromas, to protecting the plants from disease, harmful insects, and environmental shifts. 

They’re present in tiny droplets within different plant parts, often encased in specialized cells or microscopic chambers.

When you rub a leaf of any aromatic plant between your fingers and smell it – like Sage or Lemon Balm – you’re actually breaking open the cells that store them, which is why you receive such a strong aroma. 

These aromatic chemicals are collected by steam distillation using stills, cold pressing, or CO2 extraction, and are bottled up for us to use. 

Sometimes it can take hundreds of pounds of plant material to get just 1 ounce of essential oil! They are potent, concentrated medicines, and should be used carefully, with intention and respect for the plants.

Rose teaches us about the deeper dimensions of the heart: self-love after disappointment, consolation during grief, compassion in times of struggle, and the courage to remain open after heartbreak.

When life feels overwhelming, Rose has an ability to help us move through difficult seasons with grace. It seems to "carry" us through hardship, offering comfort during times of grief, emotional exhaustion, trauma, or loss. 

When life feels sharp around the edges, Rose softens them. When sorrow settles heavy in the chest, Rose gently uplifts. Like a warm embrace from a trusted friend, Rose brings support to the mind, body, and spirit.

From an energetic perspective, Rose is considered cooling to the emotional heart. It helps disperse excess heat that manifests as anger, frustration, irritability, resentment, or rage. 

Rather than suppressing difficult emotions, Rose encourages us to acknowledge them, feel them, and gently release them. Its aroma creates a safe container for emotional processing, helping stagnant feelings begin to move again.

There are many reference books out there to help you identify plants based on where you live. 

There may even be herbalists or groups in your area that lead outdoor education classes and plant walks.

One of my favorite things to do is bring along a plant guide book on a camping, hiking, or backpacking trip and try to identify and learn more about the plants I see along the way. 

If you’re going wild harvesting, remember to practice sustainability. Wild harvesting is much more complex than going out into nature and digging up plants. 

It’s important to be 100% certain in your plant identification before harvesting. It’s also important to educate yourself on what plants are endangered, how to harvest them to encourage future growth, and ask yourself if you truly need the plant that you’re considering harvesting, and if so, how much to harvest so you don't waste any. 

As Robin Wall Kimmerer says, “Know the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them. Sustain the ones who sustain you, and the Earth will last forever.”
